The California Dreamin Milkcrate #6 Donnie & Joe Emerson – Baby

May 18, 2011 in Music

Los Angeles traffic is THE worst. To compensate for it, CA has some of the best radio stations in the world. I remember being stuck on the 405 South after a way too long day at work listening to this 70ies rock station. When the sun started to set, this song came on (very 8th grader essay-ish, I know). You get the picture. Extraterrestrial! If this one does not get you away from it all, I don’t think I can help you…79 is the year and the whole LP is an absolute nugget.

Vnukovo supposed to be closed and merged with Sheremetyevo

April 3, 2011 in Moscow, News

Here is an interesting piece of news I just picked up from Reuters… Putin had a meeting with Moscow city officials last monday and they decided to close the city owned Vnukovo airport and merge it with the state owned Sheremetyevo to counter the rise of the cities most modern and in my opinion successful airport, the privately held Domededovo. Well, the conspiracy theory enthusiasts among you should keep their eyes and ears open ;-) . Those who think about monopolists and government officials filling their pockets with money as well, since they also said in that meeting, that Sheremetyevo should be privatized after the merger, cling cling…

“We agreed with the mayor of Moscow, the transport minister and a representative of the Finance Ministry to combine into a single complex Sheremetyevo, 100-percent owned by the government, and Vnukovo airports, where the government holds a 75-percent stake,” Putin said.

Here is the full story at Reuters…

Bummer. I liked Vnukovo. It was easy to get there. Usually there were not so many lines, as in Domodedovo and the terminal was renovated bit by bit, over the past years, making it much more comfortable to fly from Vnukovo. What a waste of money… I considered it always as a real alternative.

Peat bog fires are again or still smoldering

April 3, 2011 in Moscow, News

Every summer its the same situation. The peat bogs are burning outside of Moscow and the smoke moves into the city. Last year was extreme, combined with the wildfires and the extreme heat. ITAR-Tass reported yesterday that there are 3 peat bogs still (or again) smoldering (beneath the surface). Its hard to understand after all the snow and one should think that the spring melt water and recent rain would help extinguish.

This is a sad reminder about last years fires and a warning towards the upcoming summer. The photo was taken from the train between Ryzan and Moscow. Lots of the woods out there are burned, some parts completely destroyed. Notice how all the lower parts of the trees are black, burned. Many trees are dead already.

What is peat (turf) and why are the fires so bad? Wikipedia has an answer…
